JAMES FERRARA / OCEAN IMAGE BANK

The Ocean Image Bank, an initiative of the nonprofit The Ocean Agency, launched in 2020 to support the UN Ocean Decade. It was built on the success of the Coral Reef Image Bank, created in 2018 to support the International Year of the Reef.

The Ocean Image Bank has become the leading library of free ocean imagery, featuring thousands of high-quality ocean photos and videos generously contributed by more than 200 of the world’s leading ocean photographers and videographers. By offering open access to high-quality imagery, the Ocean Image Bank addresses the lack of such imagery available to ocean scientists, conservationists, educators, and the media, providing the imagery needed to engage the public and inspire action.

Since its launch, the free resource has been used by leading media outlets, nonprofits, research institutions, and global organizations worldwide. The imagery supports everything from news coverage and public campaigns to scientific reports and policy communications, helping ensure that ocean science and conservation receive the attention needed to drive action.
